On 17 April 2017, NISCSS President Wu Shicun headed a delegation of Chinese scholars to visit Japan, and held a discussion in Tokyo with Japanese scholars on the research of the issues related to Diaoyu Islands and lawmakers from the Democratic Party and Liberal Democratic Party.

Wu made a speech on the current situation in the South China Sea, the US policy on the South China Sea, Sino-Japanese relations and the South China Sea arbitration. The two sides exchanged ideas on the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, land reclamation in the South China Sea, and COC consultation.

Also present at the discussion were Executive Director Zhu Feng with the Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea Studies at Nanjing University, Professor Yu Tiejun with Peking University and Professor Zhang Renping with Dalian Maritime University and staff of Chinese embassy in Japan.
