On 10 November 2015, NISCSS President Wu Shicun held a discussion with Thomas Renard (senior research fellow at EGMONT-Royal Institute for International Relations), Thomas Renard (head of the Northeast Asia Division  at the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and others in Brussels. The two sides exchanged ideas on the South China Sea situation, the arbitration launched by the Philippines against China and the EU's stance on the South China Sea issues.

Relevant personnel from the Chinese Mission to the EU and the Chinese Embassy in Belgium also attended the discussion.
