On 14 January 2016, Max Baucus, the United States ambassador to China, led a nine-member delegation to visit the NISCSS and exchanged ideas with NISCSS President Wu Shicun about the current situation in the South China Sea.

NISCSS Vice President Xi Jinsong and part of NISCSS research staff attended the meeting.
