On 7 March 2017, NISCSS President Wu Shicun attended the RSIS Maritime Security Programme Workshop on Understanding Freedom of Navigation – ASEAN Perspectives in Singapore.

In his panel speech, Wu made a profound analysis of the current situation in the South China Sea and the uncertainties that might influence its future trends, China-U.S. divergences on the regime of freedom of navigation under the framework of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as well as the possible influences of U.S. presence in the South China Sea on regional security and order.

Organized by Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), this closed-door workshop brought together about 30 scholars and experts of think tanks, research institutes and government agencies from multiple countries, including the U.S., Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
