NISCSS President Wu Shicun Visited Tokyo for Academic Exchanges

From 31 July to 3 August, NISCSS President Wu Shicun visited National Ocean Policy Secretariat Cabinet Office  as well as several institutes such as Sasakawa Peace Foundation Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI-SPF), Japan Forum on International Relations(JFIR), 893 Academic Community, and Association for the Promotion of International Trade of Japan (JAPIT) in Tokyo for academic exchanges.

 

On 31 July, a close-door discussion was held at the OPRI-SPF, focusing on the Indo-Pacific Strategy and security issues related to Japan’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). President Wu spoke at the workshop, along with other Chinese participants of the 2018 China-Japan Dialogue on Ocean Affairs. Scholars and experts present from the Japanese side were from National Ocean Policy Secretariat Cabinet Office as well as a variety of universities and research institutes, including Sophia University, Nihon University, Waseda University, Nakasone Yasuhiro Peace Institute, Japan Institute for National Fundamentals, and National Institute for Defense Studies.

 

On 1 August, Dr. Wu attended a workshop entitled “China-Japan Relations during the Era of Power Shift” at JFIR. The discussion focused on a series of key regional geopolitical topics such as current China-Japan relations, Northeast Asian regional order, and Japan’s participation in the BRI. In the keynote speech, Dr. Wu had an in-depth analysis on issues such as the status quo of the South China Sea, Japan and BRI, and the future development of the Indo-Pacific Strategy. Also present at the workshop were experts and scholars from various research institutes, universities and corporations from both China and Japan, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, PLA Academy of Military Science, Tokyo University, Meiji University, Tunghai University, J.F. Oberlin University, Kansai Gaidai University, Doshisha University, Itochu Economic Research Institute, Mitsui & Co. Global Strategic Studies Institute, Sojitz Corporation Department of Overseas Business,and MUFG Bank Planning Department.

 

On August 2, Dr. Wu visited the National Ocean Policy Secretariat Cabinet Office and met with Director General Mr. Kawazu Kunihiko. The two sides exchanged views on Japan’s Third Basic Plan on Ocean Policy as well as issues of mutual interests.

 

On 31 July and August 3, Dr. Wu visited the 893 Academic Community and JAPIT respectively. He had in-depth talks with scholars and experts as well as entrepreneurs of these two institutes regarding the development of Hainan Province as a pilot Free Trade Zone (FTZ) and Free Trade Port (FTP) with Chinese characteristics, such as its strategic positioning, goals to achieve and development roadmap.
