On 23 October 2019, upon the invitation of the Academy of Military Science of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), NISCSS President Wu Shicun attended the first China-ASEAN Defense Think Tank Exchange in Beijing. He delivered a speech at the session on the new development of the current regional security situation and possible solutions, and pointed out that great power competition is the biggest threat to the peace in the South China Sea.

During the event, Dr. Wu also met with General Wei Fenghe, State Councilor and Minister of National Defense, along with some selected scholars from think tanks home and abroad.
