China hopes that Italian people would overcome the difficulties brought by the recent earthquake and rebuild their homes as soon as possible, President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday.

Xi made the remarks while meeting with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Sardinia island, where Xi's plane stayed overnight for technical stop on his way to Latin America.

Calling Italy a trustworthy friend and important partner in the European Union, Xi said that China attaches great importance to the development of China-Italy ties.
