(Opinion) An Asia-Pacific free trade deal may be goal in post-TPP era

"US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 23 officially announcing the US' withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a sign that Trump has separated himself from the Obama legacy and more importantly, he fulfilled his campaign pledge by responding to the economic demands of the lower middle class voters.


The TPP, which was formed through six years of unremitting push by the Obama administration, is aimed at seizing the power to define the future economic order in the Asia-Pacific region, with a deeper consideration to win over China in the strategic competition. While in the Trump era, the US trade policy has become more pragmatic, attaching more importance to the fairness of the trade deal as well as the economic gains and losses it would bring to the US, in particular, whether it would impact lower middle class employment."
