Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is leaning heavily toward dissolving the Lower House next month for a snap election to exploit disarray in the opposition camp and secure a third consecutive term.

He immediately faced accusations of trying to dodge more opposition questioning about scandals that have dogged his administration for months.

Abe seems to be inclined to dissolve the powerful Lower House when the Diet convenes for an extraordinary session Sept. 28 for a snap poll that most likely will be called Oct. 22.
