Trump calls on Kim to return Japan’s hostages

President Trump has urged North Korea to return Japanese civilians it has abducted, saying it would help to defuse the nuclear crisis.


Mr Trump, who arrives in South Korea today on the latest leg of a 12-day Asian tour, also reiterated that he would be willing to meet Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator.


Speaking in Tokyo on the second day of his visit, the US president called Pyongyang “a threat to the civilised world and international peace and stability” and secured the support of Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, in keeping open “all options” for ending its nuclear programme, including military force.
