Trump softens tone to say US is open for business

President Trump took to the stage at Davos to launch a sales pitch for investment in America and softened his isolationist rhetoric. Speaking to a group of the world’s political and business elite, Mr Trump declared that he had created “a brand new United States”.


“The world is witnessing the resurgence of a strong and prosperous America,” he said. “We are competitive once again. We have just enacted the largest tax cuts in American history.”


He also raised the prospect of re- engaging in the trading pact with Canada, Australia and Japan and other nations that make up the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) group. Pulling out of those talks was one of Mr Trump’s first acts as president and this week the 11 remaining nations said they were moving forward without the US. America could negotiate with the members “individually or perhaps as a group, if it is in the interest of all”, Mr Trump said. He has previously said that he would focus only on bilateral deals.
