US wants to thwart China by nationalising telecoms

President Trump’s national security team believes that China is winning a new technology arms race and has proposed that the US embrace one of its rival’s bedrock strategies: the nationalisation of critical infrastructure.


A leaked internal memo drafted by members of Mr Trump’s National Security Council warns that America is falling behind. “The current algorithm battles are slowly drifting in China’s favour,” it says. “Data is the oil of the 21st century and China has built the world’s first strategic reserve.”


The document argues for a radical rethink of US policy under which the federal government would build and own a new “5G” system — the next generation of mobile internet — to create a “single, inherently protected information transportation superhighway.” Access would be leased to private telecoms companies, which now build their own infrastructure. It could improve cybersecurity by boycotting Chinese hardware, the memo says.
