South Africa’s ruling party has decided to remove President Zuma from office after he refused to resign, local media have reported.

The African National Congress (ANC) is said to have resolved to “recall” Mr Zuma following a marathon 13-hour meeting of its executive committee. The president is under no constitutional obligation to obey but faces a humiliating no confidence vote in parliament if he refuses to go.

The decision follows reports Mr Zuma was issued with an ultimatum by Cyril Ramaphosa, the leader of the ANC, to quit within 48 hours or face being forced out. Mr Ramaphosa was driven in a motorcade to Mr Zuma’s residence to deliver the message in person and he returned to the party meeting about an hour later.
