President Trump’s personal lawyer risked complicating nuclear talks with North Korea yesterday when he said that Kim Jong-un had got “on his hands and knees and begged” for next week’s summit between the two leaders in Singapore.

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor who has become the most visible member of Mr Trump’s legal team, suggested that the president’s decision to cancel his meeting with Mr Kim last month had been a stroke of tactical genius.

“Well, Kim Jong-un got back on his hands and knees and begged for it,” Mr Giuliani told a conference in Tel Aviv. “Which is exactly the position you want to put him in.”
