Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Japan is prepared to meet some of the costs of inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure the "complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement" of North Korea's nuclear program.

Appearing on a June 16 program broadcast by Osaka-based Yomiuri Telecasting Corp., Abe touched upon the denuclearization of North Korea in light of the recent summit talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"We must have the IAEA conduct a thorough inspection. It would be only natural for Japan to shoulder the costs if it ended up enjoying the benefits of peace after the threat of nuclear weapons was removed," he said, adding that, "Rather than giving the money to North Korea, the measure could be pushed forward by creating a new (international) agency."
