Athens is back in control after eight years of crushing austerity

Greece is set to take back the reins of its economy for the first time since the height of the financial crisis, when the country was on the brink of crashing out of the euro.


Eurozone finance ministers agreed yesterday that Athens had carried out enough reforms to leave its bailout programme. Greece’s economy has shrunk by almost a quarter since 2010 when it had to seek funding from eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).


Ministers from the 19 eurozone countries meeting in Luxembourg were expected to declare that Greece no longer needed European support when the bailout programme expires in August. That will allow Athens to set its economic policy without having to check with the European Commission and the IMF.
