European Union leaders have discussed their fears that the “immense pressure” President Trump’s policies are putting on NATO could lead to its break-up.

Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, painted a bleak picture of the Trump administration at a dinner last night.

“Despite our tireless efforts to keep the unity of the west, transatlantic relations are under immense pressure due to the policies of President Trump,” he said. Mr Tusk, a former Polish prime minister and a dissident under its Communist regime, fears that Mr Trump is forging an American approach that is hostile to the international order, including NATO.
