WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump will declare a national emergency that will pave the way for him to bypass Congress and get funding from other parts of the government budget to build a border wall, and sign a border security and spending deal to avert a government shutdown scheduled to begin on Friday (Feb 15).

His decision was announced by Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell on the Senate floor on Thursday (Feb 14) and confirmed by White House press secretary Sarah Sanders in a separate statement.

Shortly after the assurance, the Senate passed the legislation, which includes US$1.375 billion (S$1.86 billion) for about 90km of fencing along the US-Mexico border, about a quarter of the US$5.7 billion the President has asked for to build the wall that was a centrepiece of his election campaign. The House is scheduled to vote later in the evening.
