French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday that Europe should cooperate with China on issues including climate change and upholding multilateralism as the two leaders addressed reporters following an online defense meeting. 

Merkel said the European Union still needs its own policy towards China despite sharing consensus with the U.S. by virtue of shared values, adding she's against a complete decoupling. 

Macron also said it's crucial for Europe to be able to make its own decisions when dealing with China.
