On 17 October 2015, NISCSS President Wu Shicun attended the 6th Xiangshan Forum in Beijing and delivered a keynote speech for the panel on security of sea lanes.

As President Wu remarked, the South China Sea is an important sea lane for China and the whole world, but it is faced with multiple security challenges, including race for geopolitical interests and sea power, overlapping claims over sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction, and inadequate facilities and mechanisms that may be used to maintain safety of navigation. So he suggested demilitarization, mechanism construction and cooperation among littoral countries to manage disputes and resolve crises. On the sidelines of the forum, he was interviewed by CCTV and other media.

This forum, themed “Security Cooperation in Asia-Pacific Region: Reality and Prospect", was co-organized by China Association for Military Science and China Institute for International Strategic Studies. There were over 500 participants - including military leaders, government officials, experts and scholars - from 49 countries and 5 international organizations. They exchanged ideas around Asia-Pacific security trend, Asian security concept, maritime security, anti-terrorism and other topics. Mr. Fan Changlong, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony.
