On 5 January 2016, Mr. Nico Schrijver, together with his wife Professor Li Yuwen visited the NISCSS, and talked with part of NISCSS research staff on the situation in the South China Sea, and the relevance of ICJ's handling of disputes over island sovereignty to the South China Sea disputes.

Nico Schrijver is professor of International Law and academic director of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, Leiden University and a member of the Senate of the Dutch house of parliament.

NISCSS Vice President Xi Jinsong attended the meeting.
