5th South China Sea-themed Summer Camp closed successfully

On 2-9 August 2016, the 5th South China Sea-themed Summer Camp was held successfully in Haikou and Zhoushan. It was co-organized by the National Institute for South China Sea Studies (NISCSS) and Zhejiang University. Twenty-two students from over ten universities across the Taiwan Strait participated in the camp in order to understand South China Sea issues from various perspectives, such as international law, law of the sea, international relations, geopolitics, history and archival study, marine biodiversity and environmental protection.

 

The tight schedule of the summer camp included lectures and seminars held by senior scholars from Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Xiamen University, Academia Sinica, Taiwan Normal University as well as officials from Coast Guard and Maritime Safety Administration. The topics involved history and archival study, the South China Sea arbitration, cross-Taiwan Strait relations and Taiwan’s South China Sea policy, development of marine resources, ecological protection, maritime law enforcement and safety of navigation. The students also visited Hainan Maritime Safety Administration of P.R.C, held a discussion with fishermen of Tanmen Town, and visited Zhejiang Zhoushan Archipelago New Area Marine Industry Cluster Area.

 

On 9 August 2016, the closing ceremony of this camp was held in Zhoushan Campus of Zhejiang University. The campers appreciated the camp as a wonderful platform for college students across the Taiwan Strait to develop cooperation, conduct exchanges and  have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of South China Sea issues. Professor Zou Keyuan of Zhejiang University, Director Chen Li of the Teaching Management Division of Ocean College of Zhejiang University, Research Fellow Ming-Shiou Jeng of Academia Sinica, Professor Wang Kuan-Hsiung of Taiwan Normal University delivered closing remarks, and awarded the summer camp certificate to every camper. They encouraged the campers to devote themselves to South China Sea studies, promote cross-Taiwan Strait cooperation and make due contribution to peace and stability in the South China Sea.
