On 18 April 2017, NISCSS President Wu Shicun met with former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and the two sides exchanged ideas on the future situation in the South China Sea, the US policy on the South China Sea, China-Japan relations, US-Japan military alliance and other issues of common concern.
