On 19 April 2017, NISCSS President Wu Shicun visited Japan National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) and exchanged views on the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, China-Japan relations, Japan’s policies towards Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Also present at the discussion were Professor Zhu Feng with Nanjing University, Professor Yu Tiejun with Peking University, Professor Zhang Renping with Dalian Maritime University and Professor Zhang Xinjun with Tsinghua University as well as staff with Chinese embassy in Japan.

Acclaimed as Japan's RAND Corporation, the NIDS is the core policy research arm of Japanese Ministry of Defense.

On the afternoon of the same day, Wu was interviewed by Ishibe Shun, a journalist with NHK, about the COC consultation, land reclamation in the South China Sea, air defense identification zone, and China-US relations.
