First day of May Day holidays sees tourism surge, with outbound travel orders up 130%: platform

China witnessed a booming tourism market on Thursday, the first day of the May Day holidays, with surging demand for outbound travel, data from travel platform Fliggy showed on Friday.
 
According to the platform, outbound travel has continued to gain popularity since the Spring Festival and Qingming holidays. On Thursday, the first day of May Day holidays, orders for outbound travel tickets soared by more than 130 percent, with orders of international cruise packages rising 149 percent. China’s Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions (SAR), Japan, Thailand, South Korea become popular outbound travel destinations.
 
Another travel agency Tongcheng said that on the first day of the five-day holidays, flights to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, South Korea from airports in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou experienced peak passenger volumes.
