Following sustained pressure from President Donald Trump to prosecute his perceived political enemies, a federal grand jury in Virginia on Thursday indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on charges related to alleged mortgage fraud.

The charges against James, a Democrat, were initiated by Trump’s hand-picked prosecutor in eastern Virginia. They come two weeks after that same prosecutor, Lindsey Halligan, obtained an indictment of former FBI Director James Comey.

Critics see both investigations as baldly political prosecutions undertaken to satisfy the demands of a vengeful president, who loathes both Comey and James because of their involvement in prior legal probes of his campaign and his business.
