How advanced are China's drone swarms today? China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) Intelligent Technology Research Institute addressed this question in an article on Sunday, saying that drone swarm technology has become a critical hard-tech capability valued by both the defense sector and civilian industries. China is accelerating its transition from isolated experiments and small-scale demonstrations to systematic deployment and large-scale application.

Based on autonomous single-node control and supported by efficient deployment and recovery, a drone swarm is an intelligent cluster combat system driven by collective emergence and centered on collaborative node interaction. 

Its key features include collective emergence, force multiplication, distributed functionality, autonomous networking, robustness and cost-effectiveness, CETC said.
