"The land reclamation, which began in late 2013, has turned submerged reefs into islands. Its actions have been focused on the Spratly islands within waters that carry about 30 percent of global trade. She cited that 90 percent of South Korea’s oil imports and more than 30 percent of its import and export materials pass through the South China Sea.

Stressing that China firmly pursues a defense policy that is defensive in nature, Hong said China opposes any country launching military operations that undermine regional safety, stability and mutual trust."
