"U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday nominated former Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter to lead the Pentagon, saying he "is rightly regarded as one of our nation's foremost national security leaders."

During a ceremony at the White House, Obama said his new nominee has a breadth of experience in the Pentagon and Capitol Hill and is well-prepared for current defense challenges overseas, including the fight with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

"He knows the Department of Defense inside and out, all of which means that on day one, he's going to hit the ground running, " Obama said."
