"The long-simmering disputes involving China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have escalated after Beijing transformed seven disputed reefs into islands, including three with aircraft runways, in the South China Sea.

China is one of seven nations with conflicting claims in the South China Sea, and the USA backs all the other nations to their extent their claims conflict with China's."
