"'The South China Sea award has stimulated many discussions. If we pay attention to Chinese social media, we can see the result triggered strong nationalistic reactions. People vowed that 'we would never accept such an unjust award' and 'we would never allow any country to infringe on the sovereign rights of China.' In some cities, US companies such as KFC, Apple and McDonalds were targeted in protests over this award. Beijing denounced the protests as 'irrational and disruptive' in the hopes that people could express their love for country in more appropriate ways.

Similar voices were also heard on other occasions. For example, many Chinese felt unjustly treated during the Olympic Games. Swimming Australia's website suffered a 'denial of service' attack after Australian swimmer Mack Horton called Sun Yang, China's most popular swimming star, a drug cheat. When the US women's 4x100-meter relay team got a second shot at the final, knocking the Chinese team out of the running, many Chinese netizens blasted the decision, with some saying 'thank God America is still ranked first in the medal list, or the US would definitely appeal to restart the whole Games.'"
