Maritime dispute talks to be bilateral

"China and the Philippines agreed on Friday to address their territorial and jurisdictional disputes in the South China Sea through negotiations exclusively involving the states directly concerned. This was a turning point in bilateral ties which means the US can no longer use tensions to increase its military presence in the region, experts said.

Shortly following this announcement, US officials told Reuters that an American warship had ventured near Chinese islands in the South China Sea.

After Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte in Beijing Thursday, the two countries issued a joint statement Friday, covering several fields such as economic cooperation, infrastructure investment, fighting drugs and the maritime disputes."
