(Opinion) White identity politics, changing face of nation behind Trump’s rise

"One of the major factors at the core of Donald Trump's support has been the sense that he will champion the interests of his supporters. To them, he speaks to the real America, an America that is overwhelmingly white. Equally, many British supporters saw Brexit as a way to restore the fortunes of their local community. In both cases, a feeling that the community was under siege by alien forces helped fuel support for their respective movements.

For many years, 'whiteness' has been an important part of mainstream American and British identity. Traditionally, groups identified as white have been the dominant political class and this dominance extended to the cultural and economic spheres.

In the US, this was combined with an unparalleled period of growth in the post-war era, where a high school education was more than enough to secure a middle-class lifestyle and parents could comfortably assume that their children would likely do better than their parents had. "
