(Opinion) Singapore’s defense ought not threaten Beijing

"Professor Wang Gungwu, chairman of the East Asian Institute in Singapore, has been my friend for years. Yet I don't fully agree with his views expressed in an article recently published in The Straits Times titled 'China and Singapore: Looking back to understand the future.' He hopes China can understand Singapore's security still depends on keeping its strategic relationship with the US. It is worth some discussion.

China has never objected that Singapore, for its own safety, maintains strategic relations with Western powers. During the first decade of Singapore's separation from Malaysia, it did face serious threats to its survival. As far as I know, almost all Chinese scholars in Southeast Asia studies had great sympathy for Singapore, and believed that its security choices were necessary."
