"Soon after the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (LDP) manipulated the Special Committee of the House of Representatives on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) to approve a proposal to ratify the TPP on November 4, US Republican candidate Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 US presidential election on Tuesday last week, which poured cold water on the plans of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Abe hurriedly sent a congratulatory message to Trump and emphasized that Japan and the US are 'unwavering allies.' Abe also announced that he would send his political aide Katsuyuki Kawai to visit Washington next week to strive for talks with those responsible for the next US government.

According to the Guardian, White House officials conceded on Friday that the TPP would not pass Congress, as 'lawmakers there prepared for the anti-global trade policies of President-elect Donald Trump.'

Abe and the LDP coalition do not like Trump and hoped that Clinton would win the election. According to media reports, before the results of the presidential election, Japan had already begun to contact the Clinton camp, and hoped to hold Japan-US summit talks as soon as possible after Clinton's victory. Then, seeing the results, the Japanese government hastily changed its opinion and sent congratulations to Trump. The contrast of the previous and the present attitude of the Abe administration is ludicrous."
