"The victory of Donald Trump
in the presidential election has not been welcomed in Europe. The new
US president is widely considered an atypical politician who might
jeopardize the transatlantic partnership. The EU diagnoses a direct
threat from his political rhetoric. Specifically, it is highly concerned
for five different reasons.
First, Trump does not value
Europe's role in the world. He seems hesitant to realize the importance
of the EU in the international system and will not necessarily pay
attention to the EU position on several foreign policy and economic
issues, possibly challenging the principle of multilateralism.
Second, he does not believe in the perspective of further European integration. He supported Brexit in the referendum of June 23, asserting that the UK could successfully follow its own course irrespective of the EU."
