"In his New Year's speech, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong
called upon people in Singapore to resist protectionism and nativist
nationalism. He said that Singapore, as a small country, cannot shut
itself from the rest of the world.
Lee's words embody the country's worry of reverse globalization. The development of Singapore relies heavily on foreign trade. However, with Brexit, US President-elect Donald Trump's emphasis on protectionism and former Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi's failure in constitutional reform, the world has seen the emergence of populism and objection to foreign trade."
