(Opinion) Challenges abound in future EU-US ties

"The first nine months of 2017 are highly significant for the future of
the EU. The Union passed the first test - as the Dutch right-wing party
failed to win the election in the Netherlands - but two more important
ones are coming, namely the French presidential election in May and the
German federal election in September. Under difficult political
circumstances, the EU is also attempting to forge a relationship with
the US with the latter being largely unpredictable in the aftermath of Donald Trump's inauguration.
A few weeks ago US Vice-President Mike Pence visited Brussels to appease European fears about a potential existential crisis in the transatlantic partnership. He succeeded in his mission but certainly the one who makes the final decision is Trump. There was no better occasion to assess the intention of the 45th US president than his recent meeting in Washington with Europe's most powerful politician, German Chancellor Angela Merkel."
