"US-China relations will be the central pillar in a new architecture that is needed to ensure stability and continued growth in the region.

Ambassador-at-Large Bilahari Kausikan, who is also Policy Advisor at the Singapore Foreign Affairs Ministry, made this point in a keynote address on Thursday (Jan 8) at a regional forum organised by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.

Amid tensions brought on by a rising China, Mr Kausikan said "no one is looking for trouble" and that the "primary risk is conflict by accident, not war by design". Speakers at the forum also underscored the importance of stable US-Sino relations."
