President Trump is ready to allow the sale of “highly sophisticated military equipment” to South Korea and Japan, opening the door to a new regional arms race as America’s allies scramble to confront the North Korean threat.
Sunday’s detonation of what Pyongyang said was a hydrogen bomb that could be mounted on an intercontinental missile appeared to have instantly altered defence calculations across Asia. South Korea has suggested tactical US nuclear weapons could be based on its soil for the first time in decades.
President Putin joined the debate yesterday when he said that a US effort to impose new sanctions on Kim Jong-un would be “useless and ineffective”. Mr Putin, whose own government is the target of US sanctions, said of North Korea: “They’ll eat grass, but they won’t abandon their [nuclear] programme unless they feel secure.”
