Abe adviser in call for Japan to acquire missiles to counter North

NEW DELHI--An aide to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe floated the idea that Japan should consider acquiring ballistic and cruise missiles to counter heightened threats from North Korea.
“I personally believe that the time has already arrived to seriously consider the possibility of the Self-Defense Forces possessing intermediate-range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles,” Katsuyuki Kawai, a Lower House lawmaker of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said in a lecture here Sept. 5.
Until August, Kawai served as a special adviser to Abe, who is also president of the LDP. He now serves as a special adviser to the LDP president on foreign affairs.
