The US yesterday pressed China and Russia to freeze the personal assets of Kim Jong-un and to impose an oil embargo on North Korea amid concerns that the rogue regime was preparing to conduct another weapons test, possibly as early as today.

A draft resolution circulated by the US to the UN security council in New York included a ban on North Koreans working overseas and on textile exports; part of an increasingly urgent bid to starve the country’s accelerating nuclear programme of hard currency.

On Sunday North Korea detonated what it said was a hydrogen bomb capable of being mounted on an intercontinental missile — drawing immediate threats of military reprisal by the US.
