Leader of collapsing Democratic Party of Japan says to step down

Seiji Maehara, head of the collapsing Democratic Party (DP) of Japan, said on Friday that he will take responsibility and step down for making the fatal decision to merge his party with the Party of Hope which suffered a significant defeat in the recent lower house election.
"I am painfully aware of my responsibility. I will resign after determining a certain direction (for the Democratic Party)," Maehara said.
Maehara made the remarks at the outset of a meeting of the party's upper house members and those in the lower house who ran as independents in the election.
