President Trump issued a stern warning against “dictators” yesterday but without explicit words of denunciation for North Korea, hinting at a shift from military threats and confrontation.
Instead, he praised the “great” North Korean people and said he would be enlisting President Putin to help to persuade Kim Jong-un to give up nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, the Pentagon gave a bleak warning about the difficulties of disarming the country by force.
“Together with our allies, America’s warriors are prepared to defend our nation using the full range of our unmatched capabilities,” Mr Trump said shortly after landing in Japan on the first leg of a 12-day, five-nation tour of Asia. “No one — no dictator, no regime and no nation — should underestimate, ever, American resolve.” He was speaking to an audience of American and Japanese military personnel at a US air force base west of Tokyo.
