UN chief António Guterres warns against sleepwalking into war with North Korea

The head of the UN said yesterday that there was a risk of “sleepwalking into war” over North Korea’s advancing nuclear weapons programme.
António Guterres, speaking during a visit to Tokyo, called for “diplomatic engagement” aimed at denuclearising the Korean peninsula in a peaceful manner. His appeal coincided with a meeting in Beijing between President Moon of South Korea and President Xi of China intended to repair ties between the two nations. Relations were strained by the installation of an American anti-missile shield in South Korea to shoot down missiles from the North.
On Tuesday Rex Tillerson, the US secretary of state, paved the way for a preliminary meeting with the North Korean regime “without precondition”. China and Russia welcomed his remarks but Kim Jong-un has yet to respond publicly.
