In the mayhem that erupted after the result was announced, the beaming winner was buoyed on to the stage by jubilant supporters as riot police and party stewards tried to stop the crowd rushing with him.
Cyril Ramaphosa’s long wait is nearly over. After winning the ANC ballot by the slimmest of margins — 179 votes — South Africa’s deputy president is on the cusp of securing the top job.
As he basked last night in the adulation of thousands in a sweltering conference hall in Soweto, his predecessor, President Zuma, sat stony-faced.
The victory represents the fulfilment of an almost three-decade long ambition to lead the movement fostered by Nelson Mandela, who nominated Mr Ramaphosa as his successor in 1999 but was overruled by the party, which picked Thabo Mbeki.
