President Trump used his first tweet of 2018 to condemn Pakistan, indicating that he would slash American aid to the country over its alleged support for terrorist groups.

After hosting a New Year’s Eve party at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Mr Trump took to social media after 8am to lambast Pakistan’s “lies & deceit”.

The barrage follows reports that Pakistani intelligence has denied the US access to a militant with the feared Haqqani network. He was captured in October during the rescue of an American-Canadian family who had been held for five years by the Taliban.
