"The Republic’s Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam said on Tuesday (Jan 27) that the killing of the Japanese hostage shows that the region would not be spared of the threat of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). 

The issue is expected to be discussed at an ASEAN Foreign Ministers retreat in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, which began on Tuesday. Mr Shanmugam, who is attending, said ASEAN should also look at ways to strengthen disaster relief responses collectively."
