Weekend negotiations have failed to find an agreement which would have prevented the US government shutdown stretching into the working week.
A vote scheduled for 1:00am was pushed back to midday, meaning hundreds of thousands of workers will be forced to stay at home, without pay, as government departments remain closed. The shutdown officially began at midnight on Friday after a final effort to extend government funding failed and Washington was left with no means to pay state employees.
Republicans and Democrats said progress had been made during a special weekend session of Congress in which both parties blamed one another for the impasse.
