For Donald Trump, it promised to be the silver bullet he yearned for. A former MI6 officer in the pay of his enemy Hillary Clinton, he was told, had precipitated the investigation into collusion with Russia by joining forces with “deep state” opponents of his within the FBI.
In this account, Christopher Steele, the perfidious former British spy, had confided to a treacherous justice department official he “was desperate . . . Donald Trump not get elected and passionate about him not being president”.
The incendiary tale came from a pair of bomb-throwing Republican congressmen during a telephone call on January 18 that was principally about the government shutdown. It had already excited rightwingers and, as soon as Trump heard it, he wanted it publicised.
